Frequently Asked Questions

When does HECS/HELP repayment start in 2025-26?

Compulsory repayments begin once your repayment income exceeds $67,000 in 2025-26. This is higher than the previous threshold of $54,435 in 2024-25.

How does the new marginal HECS repayment system work?

From 1 July 2025, repayments are calculated only on income above the $67,000 threshold — at 15 cents per dollar above $67,000 (up to $125,000), then $8,700 plus 17 cents above $125,000. Previously, the rate applied to your entire income, which caused a sharp jump when you crossed the threshold. The new system is fairer.

Was HECS debt reduced by 20%?

Yes. Legislation passed in 2025 reduced all HECS/HELP balances by 20% and changed the repayment calculation method to the new marginal system. Both changes took effect from 1 July 2025.

Do I tick the HECS box on my tax file number declaration?

Yes. When you start a new job, tick the HECS/HELP box on your TFN declaration. This tells your employer to withhold extra tax to cover your estimated repayment. If you don't tick it, you'll need to pay the full repayment when you lodge your tax return.
